HC Deb 10 December 1958 vol 597 cc67-8W
89. Mr. Edelman

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation to what extent Bedford vans converted for private passenger transport and licensed as private cars are subject to the speed limit applicable to vans.

Mr. Nugent

With unimportant exceptions, the only vehicles not subject to a speed limit outside built up areas are those constructed solely for the carriage of passengers and their personal effects, having an unladen weight not exceeding 3 tons, and dual purpose vehicles as defined in the Motor Vehicles (Variation of Speed Limit) Regulations, 1956, provided in each case they are adapted to carry not more than seven passengers excluding the driver. All other vehicles constructed or adapted to carry any goods are at all times subject to a speed limit of 30 m.p.h. or less except on motorways. The classification of vehicles for taxation purposes has no relevance to speed limits.
