HC Deb 10 December 1958 vol 597 cc58-9W
Mr. Mason

asked the Postmaster- General what steps are being taken by his Department, in consultation with the Medical Research Council and the Department for Scientific and Industrial Research, to ascertain fully the dangers arising from civilian applications of radio frequency radiation of forward scatter stations and the measures to be taken to protect the public.

Mr. K. Thompson

The Post Office, with the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and other Government Departments, is co-operating with the Medical Research Council in a study of the possible dangers associated with future developments of this kind, with a view to deciding what practical measures it may be necessary to take to protect the public and operating personnel. The design and location of existing civil types of forward-scatter stations are such that they represent no danger to the public. So far as current military types of forward-scatter stations are concerned, I would refer the hon. Member to the Answer given by my hon. Friend the Under-Secretary of State for Air, to him and the hon. Member for Lincoln (Mr. de Freitas) on 5th November last.
