Mr. Gresham Cookeasked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation if he will list the grants which have been notified, as distinct from made, to local authorities for schemes of major road improvement and new construction of classified roads for 1959–60, and for the current financial year.
§ Mr. WatkinsonGrants are not notified in advance to highway authorities in the sense of a promise to make them available in any particular financial year. Where possible, however, highway authorities are given some guidance on when there may be a reasonable chance of including in the road programme schemes which they wish to carry out. It would not, in my view, serve any useful purpose to publish advance lists of grants which may, or may not, be made in particular years.
