§ 63. Dame Irene Wardasked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs whether he is aware that the Civil Service Housing Association adopt the practice of arranging mortgages on the credit-worthiness of the applicant irrespective of sex; and if he will, before making a loan to any building society, ensure that a similar procedure is adopted.
§ Mr. H. BrookeI am informed by the Building Societies Association that the policy of most of its members is to treat a woman applicant for a loan in exactly the same way as a man if she is in regular employment and earning a sufficient income. There is no discrimination on grounds of sex in such a case, and no male guarantor is normally required. For my part, I have no doubt that building societies wishing to participate in the Government's house purchase scheme will be prepared to work in accordance with this policy.
