Mr. F. Noel-Baker

asked the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation what representations he has received from the Pedestrians' Association and other bodies regarding the sale of alcohol in premises on the new motorways; and what reply he has given.

Grants are made under one heading for both maintenance and minor improvements, and the mileage of classified road is only one factor taken into account. The figures are:

The Pedestrians' Association and a number of temperance organisations have represented to me that on motorways the sale of alcohol should be banned. I shall, of course, give due weight to these views before reaching conclusions.
