HC Deb 02 December 1958 vol 596 cc123-4W
Mr. Bevan

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether Her Majesty's Government will take the initiative in opening negotiations with regard to the Chinese offshore islands, now that there has been a cessation in the bombardment of those islands from the mainland; and whether approaches will be made to the Government of the United States, without delay, to achieve that same objective.

Mr. Selwyn Lloyd

So far as I am aware, the bombardment of Quemoy is still continuing on alternate dates. Discussions between representatives of the United States and China are continuing in Warsaw. On the general question the attitude of Her Majesty's Government remains as stated by me in the debate on the Address on 30th October.
