HC Deb 29 April 1958 vol 587 c30W
Mr. Viant

asked the Minister of Health how many of the inoculated children developed poliomyelitis in 1957; and how many of the cases were of the paralytic form.

Mr. Walker-Smith

During 1957 32 cases of poliomyelitis, 16 of them paralytic, were reported in England and Wales in children who had had two injections of vaccine since the introduction of the scheme in May, 1956.

There is no guarantee of complete protection with any immunising agent, and in the case of poliomyelitis vaccine 70 per cent. is generally accepted as the measure of protection to be expected against paralytic poliomyelitis.
