Mr. Hurdasked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what steps he is taking to obtain scientific confirmation of the circumstantial evidence on which his Department attributes over half the primary outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in Great Britain to infection brought by South American meat.
§ Mr. GodberAs I explained in the reply which I gave to my hon. Friend on 12th December, 1957, we collect all the information we can having a bearing on the origin of each outbreak. But the events that cause each case occur a week or more before the animals become ill 89W and the trouble is reported. Therefore scientific confirmation is extremely difficult to obtain.
