Mr. Lewisasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that in 1951 a person buying his house by means of a £1,500 mortgage loan from a local authority was repaying over a 20-year period £8 10s. per month, and that this repayment has now increased to £11 per month; and whether, in his forthcoming Budget, he will take the necessary action to assist house purchasers to enjoy the same opportunities of house purchase which they were enjoying in 1951.
