HC Deb 03 April 1958 vol 585 c197W
Mr. Swingler

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what complaints he has received in the last two years about the alleged introduction of foot-and-mouth disease into the United Kingdom through the import of Argentine beef and mutton; what steps have been taken to investigate these complaints, and with what results; and if he is now satisfied with the present position regarding such imports.

Mr. Godber

Representations have been received recently from the Royal Agricultural Society of England, the National Farmers' Union and the Fat-stock Marketing Corporation, and from time to time from other sources. All outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in this country are investigated by our veterinary officers. Out of 75 primary outbreaks in 1956 and 1957, 40 were attributed to meat imported from South America. With regard to the last part of the Question, I would refer the hon. Member to the statement which my right hon. Friend made in the debate on the Adjournment on 5th March.
