2. Mr. E. L. Mallalieu

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations what steps are being taken towards the Africanisation of the administration of the Bechuanaland Protectorate.

Mr. Alport

I would refer the hon. Member to my answer to the Question asked by the hon. Member for Rugby (Mr. J. Johnson) on 27th March.

Mr. J. Johnson

asked the Under-Secretary of State for Commonwealth Relations how many Africans are in the junior and senior service, respectively, of the Bechuanaland Protectorate; and if he will give these figures separately for men and women.

Mr. Alport

In the junior service of the Bechuanaland Protectorate there are 1,314 Africans, of whom 1,192 are men and 122 women. In the Senior Service there are four Africans, three men and one woman.
