HC Deb 02 April 1958 vol 585 cc148-9W
62. Mr. Osborne

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will request the Economic Division of the United Nations to issue an up-to-date estimate of the income per capita of its various members similar to the one published in 1949 which showed the United States of America at 1,453 dollars, the United Kingdom at 773 dollars, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics at 308 dollars, Japan at 100 dollars, India at 57 dollars, and China at 27 dollars.

Mr. Ian Harvey

It is the intention of the United Nations Statistical Office to publish estimates of nationalper capita income at approximately three-year intervals. The most recent edition entitled "Per Capita National Product of 55 Countries: 1952 to 1954" was published in 1957 and is available in the Library of the House. Since annual changes in these estimates are, relatively small, more frequent publication would scarcely be justified in view of the trouble and expense involved.
