HC Deb 02 April 1958 vol 585 cc168-9W
Mr. Dodds

asked the Minister of Health what is now the medical establishment in respect of mental hospitals; and to what extent it is adequate for carrying out treatment which modern medical science makes possible.

Mr. Walker-Smith

For the number of medical staff in mental illness departments in whole-time equivalents I would refer the hon. Member to the reply given to the hon. Member for St. Pancras, North (Mr. K. Robinson) on 10th March. This number represents an increase of about 30 per cent. in five years. It seems likely that some increase in medical staffing of mental hospitals may be necessary to secure the full benefits of modern advances in medical science.
