HC Deb 02 April 1958 vol 585 c150W
70. Mr. Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether he is aware of the concern felt by the people of Germany, Yugoslavia, Poland and Great Britain at the decision of the West German Government to equip the German Army with nuclear weapons; and whether he will support the Yugoslav Government's decision to raise this matter at the United Nations and, if need be, table a suitable resolution at the United Nations on behalf of Her Majesty's Government deploring the action now being taken by the Bonn Government.

Mr. Selwyn Lloyd

The German Government's decision is that their Army should be equipped with nuclear weapons if the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation Council thinks it desirable after taking the advice of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation military authorities. If and when this happens the warheads would not be under German control. I am aware that widely different views are held on this subject in the countries to which the hon. Member refers.

The answer to the second part of the Question is that I am not aware of any such Yugoslav decision. The answer to the third part is "No."
