Sir C. Mott-Radclyffe

asked the Prime Minister the names of the delegates from the United Kingdom Parliament to the Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe.

The Prime Minister

The Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe will be meeting in Strasbourg from 28th April to 3rd May, and I have appointed eighteen delegates from the Parliament of the United Kingdom. The distribution of the appointments between the parties is the same as in the previous delegation, that is, nine members of the Conservative Party, eight members of the Labour Party and a representative of the Liberal Party. I have also appointed a number of substitute delegates.

The appointments of the Labour and Liberal representatives and substitutes have, of course, been made on the basis of nominations by the Leaders of those parties.

The same delegation will represent the United Kingdom Parliament at the Assembly of Western European Union which is expected to meet in Strasbourg early in July.

Representatives from the Government benches will be the right hon. Members for Richmond, Yorks (Sir T. Dugdale), Moss Side (Dame Florence Horsbrugh); the hon. Members for Rutherglen (Mr. Brooman-White), Antrim, South (Mr. Knox Cunningham), Henley (Mr. Hay), Croydon, North-East (Vice-Admiral Hughes Hallett), Scotstoun (Sir J. Hutchison), Gravesend (Mr. Kirk), and Viscount Stonehaven.

Representatives from the Labour Party will be the right hon. Members for Brighouse and Spenborough (Mr. J. Edwards), Llanelly (Mr. J. Griffiths), Middlesbrough, East (Mr. Marquand); and the hon. Members for Bedwellty (Mr. Finch), Oldham, West (Mr. Hale), Salford, West (Mr. Royle), Dunbartonshire, West (Mr. Steele), Bristol, South (Mr. Wilkins).

The representative from the Liberal Party will be the hon. Member for Bolton, West (Mr. Holt).

The following substitutes have been appointed to act for the delegates when they are absent from Strasbourg:

From the Government benches, the hon. Members for Armagh (Mr. Armstrong), Horncastle (Commander Maitland), Eastleigh (Mr. D. Price), Wembley, South (Mr. Russell), Conway (Mr. P. Thomas), and the Marquess of Lansdowne.

From the Labour Party, Gorbals (Mrs. Cullen), Park (Mr. Mulley), Gateshead, West (Mr. Randall), Sedgefield (Mr. Slater).

From the Liberal Party, Lord Grantchester.
