HC Deb 02 April 1958 vol 585 cc153-4W
78. Mr. G. Thomas

asked the Minister of Labour the percentage of insured workers in Cardiff who are registered as unemployed; and what is the comparative percentage for the whole country.

Mr. Iain Macleod

At 17th March, there were 3,015 unemployed persons on the registers of employment exchanges in Cardiff. It is not possible to compute a percentage rate of unemployment for Cardiff, but for the combined area of Barry, Bute Docks, Cardiff, Llantwit Major and Penarth the percentage rate of unemployment at that date was 2.7. The figures for Great Britain for 17th March are not yet available. At 17th February the percentage rate of unemployment in the combined area was 2.8, compared with 1.9 per cent. for Great Britain as a whole.

79. Mr. G. Thomas

asked the Minister of Labour the number of men over 45 years of age who are registered as unemployed in Cardiff; and what proportion of these have been unemployed for three months or longer.

Mr. Iain Macleod

A detailed analysis according to age and duration of unemployment is only obtained every six months. At 9th December, 1957, the number of men aged 50 years and over registered as wholly unemployed at employment exchanges in the Cardiff area was 720, of whom 444 had been continuously unemployed for over three months.

80. Mr. G. Thomas

asked the Minister of Labour the number of people registered as unemployed in Cardiff at the most recent convenient date; and what were the comparative figures for 1957 and 1956, respectively.

Mr. Iain Macleod

Three thousand and fifteen at 17th March, compared with 2,370 at 11th March, 1957, and 1,663 at 12th March, 1956.
