§ LORD LUCAS OF CHILWORTHasked Her Majesty's Government if they will state the number of prosecutions, the number of convictions, the number of prison sentences, and the average amount of fines inflicted under Sections 8, 9 and 26 of the Road Traffic Act, 1956, for the twelve months ending October, 1957, and a like statement of comparable figures for the twelve months ending October, 1956; also in relation to the foregoing, if they will state the number of magisterial sentences which have been either quashed or reduced on appeal by superior courts during the period of twelve months ending October, 1957.
§ LORD CHESHAMI regret that this information is not at present available. Statistical information of this kind is published in the annual Return of Offences Relating to Motor Vehicles. The Return for 1956 will be published shortly and that for 1957 in about a year's time. A comparison will then be possible with the numbers in each year of offences dealt with in Section 26 of the Road Traffic Act. 1956. The figures of offences dealt with in Sections 8 and 9 will, however, be shown separately for the first time in the Return for 1957. A comparison with 1956 will not, therefore, be possible.
House adjourned at twenty-five minutes before ten o'clock.
