asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) the average weekly cost of keeping children in remand homes;

(2) the number of places available and occupied in remand homes.

The number of places available in local authority remand homes on 30th June, 1957, was 1,178. The average daily population during the first six months of the year was 728. The average weekly cost per child in the current financial year is estimated to be £12 11s. 10d.
