Mr. Owen

asked the Minister of Health the number of qualified opticians working in the National Health Service at the nearest convenient date, and the number of unqualified opticians so employed.

Mr. Walker-Smith

At the end of 1956 the number in England and Wales was about 7,300, all of them qualified in accordance with the National Health Service (Supplementary Ophthalmic Services) Regulations. In addition, about 200 students were working under supervision.
