asked the Minister of Labour how many people have their wages or salaries tied to the cost-of-living index; and if he will consider the desirability of tying them instead to the figure for national productivity.

It is estimated that about 2 million workpeople are employed in industries which have arrangements for the automatic adjustment of wages following upon changes in the Index of Retail Prices. These arrangements or any other alternative arrangements which might be considered are matters for the parties in the industries concerned to decide.
