HC Deb 12 November 1957 vol 577 c42W
Sir J. Hutchison

asked the Secretary of State for War what are the insuperable objections to any other type of amalgamation than that of amalgamating the Highland Light Infantry and the Royal Scots Fusiliers.

Mr. John Hare

Every possible combination of Scottish infantry regiments was considered before it was decided which of them to amalgamate. Regimental history and tradition, recruiting records and recruiting areas were among the many factors to be borne in mind. Four Scottish regiments had to be amalgamated, and the final selection was made after the most thorough sifting of every alternative. The need for any reduction of our regiments is a matter for deep regret; there is no scheme of amalgamation which is free from grounds of objection.
