HC Deb 12 November 1957 vol 577 cc25-6W
60. Mr. Grimond

asked the Prime Minister, in view of Mr. Krushchev's official declaration that Russia will never start a war, if he will make a similar declaration on behalf of Her Majesty's Government.

The Prime Minister

The hon. Member has somewhat oversimplified Mr. Krushchev's statement. What he is reported to have said isWe solemnly declare that our people have never contemplated and do not intend in the future to use any means of destruction unless our country is subjected to an attack on the part of the imperialist countries.

I willingly declare that Her Majesty's Government have no intention of making any aggressive attack on the Soviet Union or its satellite countries. This of course does not affect our treaty obligations to come to the assistance of other countries of the free world if they are attacked.
