HC Deb 27 March 1957 vol 567 cc115-6W
80. Mr. Benn

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what reply has been given to the request of the Tanganyika African National Union for target dates for the realisation of independence.

Mr. Profumo

No such request has been received from the Tanganyika African National Union, although the subject has featured in certain remarks by members of the Union. The views of Her Majesty's Government and of the Tanganyika Government in the matter of constitutional time-tables are already well-known and were recently reaffirmed in the statement made by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs to the United Nations General Assembly on 26th February, 1957, the text of which was circulated in the OFFICIAL REPORT for 6th March, 1957. This statement has received wide publicity in the Territory.
