HC Deb 21 March 1957 vol 567 cc61-2W
63. Mr. J. Rodgers

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement on his future policy in regard to the Special Constabulary.

Mr. R. A. Butler

The strength of the Metropolitan Special Constabulary has steadily declined in recent years and the Commissioner of Police recently appointed a Committee with the following terms of reference: To examine the organisation, administration, training and employment in peace and war of the Metropolitan Special Constabulary and to make recommendations affecting improvements and economy in the light of experience and present-day conditions. The Committee has not yet reported, and I have no statement to make at present. I should, however, like to take this opportunity of expressing my appreciation of the valuable services rendered by Special Constables throughout the country.
