HC Deb 21 March 1957 vol 567 c57W
50. Mr. G. Wilson

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what representations he has had from the Cornwall Sea Fisheries Committee as to the effect on the Cornish pilchard industry of the licence granted for the import into this country of £30,000 worth of Japanese canned pilchards.

Mr. Godber

The Committee has represented that the import of Japanese canned pilchards could have most serious effects on the Cornish pilchard industry. In reply, the Committee has been informed that the quota of £30,000 for the year ending 30th September, 1957, is very small in relation to the current level of supplies from all sources, that careful consideration was given to the possible effect on the home industry and that the granting of a quota was a part of the recent trade arrangements with Japan.
