HC Deb 14 March 1957 vol 566 c206W
85. Mr. Braine

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware of anxieties which Commonwealth producers of primary agricultural crops now feel following the announcement by the Messina countries that they will extend the Common Market arrangements both to their overseas dependencies and to certain foodstuffs; and whether, in the light of this, he still expects to secure the exclusion of food, drink, tobacco and feeding stuffs in return for United Kingdom participation with the Messina Powers in a wider European Free Trade area.

Mr. Birch

We are in the closest touch with other members of the Commonwealth, and we remain fully determined to safeguard our common interests.
