HC Deb 04 March 1957 vol 566 c17W
Mr. Mason

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government what tonnage of dirt is extracted from the coal mines annually and dispersed over the countryside in the form of spoil heaps; how many acres of agricultural land are still being covered annually by these creeping soil heaps; and if he will give the respective figures for each county.

Mr. H. Brooke

I understand that no figures for the tonnage of dirt tipped annually are available. It is estimated that about 500 acres, mostly agricultural land, may be used in this way each year. I regret that details for each county are not available.
