asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what representations he has received from the Ayrshire County Council about the need for a new maternity unit at Ballochmyle Hospital, Ayrshire; and what was the nature of his reply.

Ayr County Council suggested to my Department in September, 1953, that a maternity unit should be provided at Ballochmyle, and was informed that the Regional Hospital Board considered that priority had to he given to areas with greater needs.
