HL Deb 31 July 1957 vol 205 c507WA
LORD FORBES

asked Her Majesty's Government if the British Transport Commission will prohibit smoking in all railway sleepers with two or more berths.

LORD MANCROFT

The British Transport Commission do not think there is any need to control smoking in sleeping compartments by regulation. Twin-berth sleeping compartments are mostly used by people travelling together; in four-berth compartments, experience has shown that the question of smoking can usually be left to the good sense and manners of the occupants.
