HL Deb 31 July 1957 vol 205 cc508-10WA
LORD BARNBY

asked Her Majesty's Government what steps, in view of the recently published report of the O.E.E.C. organisation on the European Textile Industry, they propose to take to hasten modification of restrictive practices in United Kingdom textile industries indicated in the Report as necessary to assist economic Production

LORD MANCROFT

I assume that my noble friend has in mind the report entitled,The Future of the European Cotton Industry. This compares the use of installed equipment in the various member countries and in the United States and concludes that multi-shift working on modern equipment is essential if the European cotton textile industries are to be competitive. Her Majesty's Government welcome all steps to improve industrial efficiency, for example, the agreement noted in the Report between employers and trade unions in the United Kingdom cotton industry.

House adjourned at twenty-two minutes before nine o'clock.
