116. Mrs. Butlerasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the number of failures in proportion to the total number of entrants of children in Mauritius 160W taking the sixth standard examination during the years 1954 to 1957, respectively.
§ Mr. Lennox-BoydA total of 17,425 children took the examination between 1954 and 1956; the 1957 examinations have not yet taken place. The percentages of failures in Government and Government-aided schools were 32 per cent. in 1954, 64 per cent. in 1955 and 39 per cent. in 1956. The figures for private schools are not immediately available but if the hon. Member wishes I will ask for a further report on this point.
