§ 65. Mr. Russellasked the President of the Board of Trade what restrictions are still imposed on imports of manufactured goods into this country from Canada.
§ Mr. Walker-SmithIn general, for balance of payments reasons, manufactured goods from Canada can only be imported under licence to meet specific needs here. Consumer goods are licensed only under the token import scheme. Some manufactured goods are, however,144W covered by the decision, which my right hon. Friend announced on 2nd July, that a number of commodities used in industry will be freed from control on 1st August.
§ 66. Mr. Russellasked the President of the Board of Trade to what extent industry is able to take advantage of Canada's need to import larger quantities of capital equipment.
§ Mr. Walker-SmithOur exports of capital equipment to Canada are substantial and have been increasing. British industry has the manufacturing capacity to supply more of Canada's needs, and I am confident that, with determined sales efforts, exports can be further increased.
