HC Deb 04 July 1957 vol 572 c136W
70. Mr. J. Johnson

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if his attention has been called to Sessional Paper, No. 7 of 1956, Mauritius Legislative Council, entitled "Report of the Mauritius Cement Project"; and what action is being taken thereon.

Mr. Profumo

Attempts have been made to interest private enterprise, both in Mauritius and in the United Kingdom, as recommended by the Report; but the prospects are not at present good since the local market is not considered large enough for economic production, and there are many technical difficulties, including the lack of a suitable local fuel.
