§ LORD HANKEYasked Her Majesty's Government for the following information about German nationals serving sentences as war criminals in Germany: (1) How many are held at Spandau; (2) How many in Werl on behalf of Great Britain: (3) How many on behalf of France at Wittlich and Neuwiel; (4) How many on behalf of the United States of America, whether in prison or on parole; (5) What prospects there are in each case of further release.
THE EARL OF GOSFORDThere are at present four major war criminals held in Spandau. Eight war criminals convicted by British military courts are in British custody at Werl. I am informed that the French authorities now hold five at Wittlich and none at Neuwied, and that the United States authorities hold 25 in the Landsberg prison and a larger number on parole.
Any release of prisoners in Spandau before expiration of sentence is a matter for agreement between the Four Powers. Any release of other war criminals before expiration of sentence is, in the first instance, a matter for recommendation to the Government concerned by the Mixed Board set up under Chapter 6 of the Bonn Settlement Convention. But assuming full remission for good conduct, there is the prospect of further releases from Werl during the next few months.
