§ Mr. Iain MacleodOn 10th December, 1956, 18,600 workers in the Midland Region were registered as wholly unemployed. In the week ended 19th January, 1957, 37,000 were estimated to be working short-time in manufacturing industries. On 12th December, 1956, there were 24,000 unfilled vacancies notified to exchanges in the region.
