§ 102. Mr. E. Fletcherasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many local authorities reserve the right to veto the election of a democratically elected alderman or counsellor.
Mr. ButlerLocal authorities have no power to veto the election of a councillor. In general, aldermen are elected by the councillors themselves; but in the City of London they are elected by the local government electors and, by ancient custom, the election is subject to ratification by the Court of Aldermen.
