§ 73. Mr. Warbeyasked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he will give details of the recent plot to assassinate the British Resident in Bahrain and the Sheikh of Bahrain.
§ Mr. Ian HarveyI know of no plot to assassinate the Political Resident. Evidence of a plot to assassinate the Ruler of Bahrain and his Adviser, Sir Charles Belgrave, was found after the arrest of the five members of the Committee of National Union, described in reply to the hon. Member's Question on 12th November. The proceedings of the Court of the Ruler of Bahrain are a matter for the Ruler and do not come within the responsibilities of Her Majesty's Government. I understand, however, that among the evidence was a document in 111W the possession of one of the prisoners stating that the Ruler, members of his family, and his Adviser were to be assassinated.
