HC Deb 28 January 1957 vol 563 cc129-30W
Captain Kerby

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies the present African population of Nyasaland; and what is the number of illiterates.

Mr. Profumo

The latest estimate of the African population of Nyasaland, June, 1956, is 2,580,000.

On the occasion of the last census, taken in 1945, questions on literacy were asked. Out of the total African population then enumerated of 2,044,707, 133,863, or 6.6 per cent., stated that they could read and write. It is possible to provide information on educational developments, but not on the growth of literacy since 1945, because statistics of this kind can normally be obtained only by a full census.
