HC Deb 21 February 1957 vol 565 c83W
60. Mr. Janner

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department on what grounds Her Majesty's Government have decided not to admit Hungarian refugees who escaped to Yugoslavia as the nearest border country, in contrast to its policy with regard to Hungarian refugees now in Austria.

Mr. R. A. Butler

The United Kingdom is not an immigration country and had already made, before the Hungarian uprising, a considerable contribution towards the liquidation of the refugee problem in Europe. In agreeing nevertheless to the reception of a large number of Hungarian refugees from Austria, Her Majesty's Government had regard not only to the plight of refugees but also to the intolerable burden that the enormous influx from Hungary was placing upon the Austrian authorities.
