HC Deb 12 February 1957 vol 564 cc160-1W
Mr. Lewis

asked the Minister of Labour if he will publish in HANSARD a table of figures showing, for the latest convenient stated date, the number of persons unemployed and on short time in the borough of Lewisham; and how this compares with a similar date in 1951.

Mr. Iain Macleod

Statistics of unemployment are compiled only for employment exchange areas. The following table gives the figures for Lewisham Employment Exchange.

NUMBERS OF UNEMPLOYED PERSONS ON THE REGISTERS OF THE LEWISHAM EMPLOYMENT EXCHANGE
Wholly unemployed Temporarily Stopped Total
15th January, 1951 904 3 907
14th January, 1957 829 2 831

The numbers "temporarily stopped" represent the numbers working short-time or otherwise stood off who were not at work on 15th January, 1951 or 14th January, 1957.
