asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer by what amount and by what percentage Government expenditure for 1956 exceeded that for 1950.

Figures for the full year 1956 are not yet available on the basis used in the National Income Blue Book. Excluding payments out of the National Insurance Fund, expenditure in 1955 was £1,046 million higher than in 1950, an increase of 30 per cent.; in the same period the gross national product rose by £5,148 million, or 44 per cent.
