asked the Minister of Labour what is the latest number of people unemployed at Gateshead; how this figure compares with figures twelve months earlier; and in which trades changes of employment have taken place.

At 14th January, 1957, there were 1,136 unemployed persons on the registers of the Gateshead Employment Exchange and Youth Employment Office, compared with 974 on 16th January, 1956. The increase of 162 consisted of small increases in a large number of industries, the largest increase being 34 in the engineering industry.
