116. Mr. Woodburn

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many cattle have been exported for killing and sale as meat abroad; and what is the value of these sales.

Mr. Godber

No precise statistics are available but it is estimated that during 1956 exports of cattle for slaughter amounted to some 80,000 head, worth between £4½ and £5 million.

117. Mr. Woodburn

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what steps are taken to prevent cruelty arising from hunger and thirst among cattle exported to the South of France.

Mr. Godber

I would refer the right hon. Member to the reply given to the hon. Member for Norfolk, South-West (Mr. Dye) and others, on 7th February.
