HC Deb 11 February 1957 vol 564 c126W
76. Mr. John Hall

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what British consulates will have been closed in the two years ended 31st December, 1957; and what effect this will have on the services available to British citizens and commercial interests.

Mr. Ian Harvey

The following consular posts have been closed since 1st January, 1956, or are to be closed by the end of this year:

Graz. Syracuse.
Florianopolis. Santander.
Paranagua. Huelva.
Natal. Gijon.
Maceio. Malaga.
Maymyo. Trebizond.
Rouen. Iskenderun.
Nantes. Dallas.
Nice. Pittsburg.
Bologna. Sarajevo.
Bari. Skoplje.

The closure of these posts is bound to cause some measure of inconvenience to British interests in the areas concerned, but it is a measure made necessary by the need for economy. The decision has been taken in each case after the most careful consideration both here and locally of the various factors involved, including the needs of British citizens and the interests of British trade.
