HC Deb 07 February 1957 vol 564 cc86-7W
Mr. Lewis

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what is the Government's present policy with regard to the Suez Canal and Egypt.

Mr. Ian Harvey

Her Majesty's Government's policy with regard to the Suez Canal has not changed since my right hon. and learned Friend stated it in reply to a Question by the hon. Member for Taunton (Mr. du Cann) on 19th December.

As regards general relations with Egypt, Her Majesty's Government have, through the Protecting Power, called upon the Egyptian Government to lift all measures taken against British subjects and property during the period of armed conflict, for reasons of military security or otherwise. This would be a first step by the Egyptian Government towards the restoration of more normal relations.
