96 and 97. Mr. Warbey

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs (1) what information has been made available to Abdul Rahman A1 Bakir, Abdul Aziz Shemlan and Abdul Ali Alaiwat, now in custody in St. Helena, regarding their rights of appeal against the sentence of the Ruler's Court of Bahrain; and what assistance will be made available to them for the preparation and conduct of such an appeal;

(2) on what date Abdul Rahman A1 Bakir, Abdul Aziz Shemlan and Abdul Ali Alaiwat were sentenced; from what date their sentence of 14 years' imprisonment commenced; and their rights of remission.

Mr. Ian Harvey

Her Majesty's Government are responsible only for the custody of these prisoners, who were sentenced on 23rd December. Any question concerning an appeal or clemency, or the information or assistance which should be made available to the prisoners, is for the Government of Bahrain. The prisoners will have the opportunity of earning the remission of one-fourth of their sentence for good conduct.
