HC Deb 04 February 1957 vol 564 cc26-7W
152. Mr. John Hall

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department the number of Hungarian refugees and British refugees from Egypt now in this country; and what amounts have been contributed by Her Majesty's Government, to date, for the Hungarian Refugee Relief Fund and the Anglo-Egyptian Refugee Relief Fund, respectively.

Mr. R. A. Butler

The numbers are about 17,500 and 4,000 respectively. As regards the second part of the Question, I would refer my hon. Friend to the reply which I gave to my hon. and gallant Friend the Member for Haltemprice (Major Wall) on 31st January.

153. Dr. Stross

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he has noted that among those expelled from Egypt, there are a few families in which the wives are British nationals married to non-British subjects; and whether in such cases facility will be given to the husbands for entry into Britain so as to prevent families being broken up.

Mr. R. A. Butler

I understand that there is a number of such cases. A great deal depends on the individual circumstances but I can assure the hon. Member that they are considered very sympathetically.
