§ 102. Mr. Stonehouseasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what arrangements have been made for farmers living in the Bugisu area of Uganda to dispose of their coffee crop; what price they receive for this coffee; and how this price is fixed.
§ Mr. ProfumoThe Bugisu Co-operative Union buys all coffee grown in the area and sells it by auction in Nairobi. Primary co-operative societies affiliated to the Union make two payments to growers. The first payment is based on a price fixed by the Bugisu Coffee Board, which is normally related to the price likely to be obtained in the world market; if the Union makes a profit, a subsequent payment is then made to primary societies. The following are the details of some recent prices.
The following are prices paid in 1956–57 and 1957–58 for No. 1 parchment and No. 2 parchment respectively:
1956–57. Initial payments 2s. and 1s. 50 cents. Total payments 2s. 56 cents and 1s. 84 cents.
1957–58. Initial payment 2s. 30 cents and 1s. The total payment is not yet known
