HC Deb 17 December 1957 vol 580 cc42-3W
85. Mr. Swingler

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the amount of dollars and other foreign currency earned by British films in the latest period for which figures are available; and if he is satisfied that this form of export is not being handicapped by the reduction in the size of the home market caused by the increasing closure of cinemas in this country due to the high rate of entertainments tax.

Mr. P. Thorneycroft

I regret that there are no figures available of the overseas earnings of British films, but I am satisfied that the present rate of Entertainments Duty is not a significant handicap to film exports.
