HC Deb 12 December 1957 vol 579 c162W
97. Mr. Russell

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies if he will make a statement on the Resolution passed last week by the Trusteeship Committee of the United Nations concerning a policy for self-government for Trust Territories.

Mr. Profumo

This Resolution called upon countries administering Trust Territories to estimate the date by which they expected them to achieve self-government or independence. The U.K. delegation voted against the Resolution. This was because Her Majesty's Government continues to regard as unrealistic any attempt to regulate by an arbitrary time limit the organic growth of constitutional development in these Territories.
